“If you look at these chairs, they are mainly made of air, like sculpture. Space passes through them” -Harry Bertoia
Italian designer Chirstophe Pillet once said: “To me, the Bertoia is like a little black dress in a woman’s wardrobe: universal, timeless and absolutely necessary.”
This iconic chair was designed by Harry Bertoia in 1950 as a result of an experiment that involved bending metal rods into practical art. ‘If you look at these chairs, they are mainly made of air, like sculpture. Space passes through them,’ said Bertoia. Manufactured by Knoll, its frame is made from strong welded steel rods in a polished chrome finish or bonded Rislan finish. Its strikingly innovative and seemingly fragile filigree construction masks the chair’s strength and durability. It is available with a removable fully upholstered cover or with loose cushions and back pads in a variety of fabrics.
The chair was awarded the Certificate of Merit by the American Institute of Architects and the Design Center Stuttgart Award (1962). Each piece carries the signature of Bertoia as a mark of authenticity. (Source: http://www.conranshop.co.uk/633673/BERTOIA-SIDE-CHAIR-CHROME-FRAME-WITH-SEAT-PAD/Product).
